I’ve recently begun to learn hand lettering, thanks to some encouragement from a contest on Creative Market. I’ve really enjoyed practicing this delightful new skill, and it has quickly been added to my list of hobbies. Just for fun, I’ve begun sharing the results on Instagram, and I plan to post new hand lettering and other designs there every so often. (Sorry, no selfies!) Check out my profile on Instagram!
This time of year holds many fond memories and expectations for me, especially as Thanksgiving draws closer. Our family Thanksgiving dinner is much anticipated as a wonderful combination of fellowship, fine food, and lots of fun. It’s also a great opportunity for me to add my designs as finishing touches to the meal, in the form of menus, place cards, and this year, a fun little save the date (not the actual date of Thanksgiving.)
I also thought this was the perfect way to enter Creative Market’s Autumn Design Contest. In the design, I used one of the Free Goods of the Week (Aperture Vintage’s Autumn Pack) as well as Vintage Design Co’s latest product, SwiftType, easily one of my new favorite items on Creative Market. And psssst… the handmade pattern brush border is featured in an upcoming tutorial AND included in a brand-new product I hope to release in the next few weeks in my shop.
Happy autumn to you! Yes, I realize at the time of this posting it is not actually fall yet, but hayfever aside, I think it is my favorite time of year, with the temperature, sweaters, flavors, and general fun of fall.
I was pretty excited and surprised to find out that one of my designs was selected as the Grand Prize winner of the Creative Market Sketch Week Challenge! Check out the final results of the competition.
Hand-lettering is a skill that I’ve wanted to learn for several months, and after collecting a lot of inspiration on Pinterest, and practicing a little bit, I’ve been pleased to find that not only do I really enjoy it, but to my ultimate surprise, it’s also earned me quite a few appreciations on Behance and follows on Pinterest. But most of all, it’s an extremely satisfying process, and I was pretty humbled to find out that my rusty efforts had been selected.
So thank you, Creative Market, for so graciously selecting my design and for giving all of us the opportunity to join in a little fun practicing our drawing skills. Here are some of my favorites:
I’ve just written a fun, detailed tutorial on how to create an art brush in Illustrator from scratch. Art brushes can be applied to paths and shapes in Illustrator to lend your artwork a artisanal, handmade look. Read the article here.
